How much does it cost to hire a wedding pianist in the UK?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive. The average cost of a UK wedding pianist on FixTheMusic is £395. This typically covers the pianist performing at your wedding ceremony. The exact price will depend on a variety of factors, such as how long the pianist is hired for, whether they have to bring their own piano or keyboard, if they need to charge travel expenses, and the pianist's level of professional experience and demand. Singing pianists charge more, simply because they are in greater demand and there are fewer pianists who also sing in the UK.
If you're on a budget, make sure you hire a local wedding pianist, one who is based near you – as then you will reduce the amount of travel expenses you are charged by the pianist.

Some of them also sing...this can be ideal for a wedding ceremony, but solo piano might be more suitable for providing background music at events like a drinks reception or formal dinner.
We've put together some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about hiring a wedding pianist, which we hope you will find useful...
What styles of music do pianists perform?
Pianists will generally perform a mixture of classical, jazz and pop covers depending on your requirements. Classical music is particularly suitable for wedding ceremonies, whereas jazz and pop covers are more suited to evening drinks receptions and corporate events. Most wedding pianists also perform arrangements of film music and songs from musicals. Some pianists also sing, which adds an extra dimension to their performance. With regard to pop covers, they can usually cover songs from rock 'n' roll, soul and funk to 90s songs and modern pop & indie covers.
What are the differences between different types of pianos?
Pianos can be acoustic or electric. Acoustic pianos are either grand pianos (with horizontal strings) or upright pianos (with vertical strings). Grand pianos can range in size from 1.5m in length (often called a baby grand piano) to approximately 2.5m in length. Grand pianos look more elegant and sound better than upright pianos. Having said this, a high-quality upright piano can produce an excellent sound as well. You should check if your venue has an acoustic piano in situ for your event – otherwise your pianist can bring an electric piano with them. Remember to check that there is an adequate power supply where the electric piano will be positioned. Electric pianos can also look sleek and elegant, especially the Nord range of digital keyboards in their striking fire-engine red colour. Some digital keyboards can be fitted with a portable baby grand shell to mimic the graceful appearance of a grand piano. As far as sound is concerned, digital keyboards have greatly advanced in recent years and now produce an incredibly realistic imitation.
What if my wedding venue doesn't have a piano?
If your wedding venue doesn't have a piano, then your pianist will bring a digital piano with them. They may charge a little extra if they have to bring their own electronic keyboard. The standard of wedding venues' pianos can be variable, so many pianists prefer to bring their own high-quality digital keyboards anyway.
Can wedding pianists perform outdoors?
Yes, they certainly can, provided the weather is warm enough and they have cover from direct sunlight and precipitation. Direct sunlight can damage acoustic and digital pianos, so please bear this in mind. An upright piano at the venue can be moved outdoors, but it can be a tricky process and it's likely that the piano will need retuning after moving into position due to the changes in temperature and humidity. So it's best to consider a digital keyboard for outdoor performance. Remember to check that there is an adequate power supply in place – most pianists have their own extension leads but it's worth checking if they need to bring them.
How long do pianists need to set up before their performance?
If there is a piano at your venue, your pianist should arrive about 30 minutes before their performance time to make sure that everything is in order. If your pianist is bringing their own digital keyboard, they may arrive about 1 hour beforehand to set up and do a soundcheck.
How much space to pianists require?
An average piano or keyboard is about 1.5m wide, so please allow no less than 2m of width. For length, grand pianos can range from 1.5m to 2.5m at the larger end. The pianist will require about 1m of space around him or her to allow for free movement.
What extra equipment should I provide?
You should provide an adjustable stool if the pianist is not bringing their own digital keyboard. If you are unable to provide a stool, an armless chair should be sufficient. They will also need very good lighting, for example a strong lamp.
Should I provide food and drinks for my pianist?
This is by no means necessary and should be discussed before booking, but a hot meal or snack as well as water or soft drinks are greatly appreciated by performing musicians. Some musicians have specific contract "riders" that stipulate what you must provide when you hire them.
