Bristol Roaming Bands

Bristol's Clifton village has something no other UK city offers for roaming band hire: a cluster of wedding venues within a 3-4 minute walk of each other.

A band can perform at the ceremony in the Clifton Club, accompany guests on foot through Mall Gardens for drinks, then walk to the Avon Gorge Hotel for another set before the wedding breakfast. One confirmed FixTheMusic booking did exactly this in May, with Bristol-based The Inlets performing for £1,050.

90 Bristol enquiries in the last 12 months show budgets from £500 to £6,000, with a median of £2,000. Many roaming bands are based locally in Bristol, with Mashup Kings (202 bookings) and The Inlets (29 bookings, £1,500-£2,500) the most-booked.

The Clifton Village Roaming Circuit

Bristol's Clifton village has a cluster of wedding venues within a 3-4 minute walk of each other that makes multi-venue roaming uniquely practical here. The Clifton Club, Mall Gardens and the Avon Gorge Hotel form a natural circuit that a roaming band can cover on foot, performing at each location without any need for amplification or transport between sets.

In May, a Bristol-born couple married at the Clifton Club and booked The Inlets for exactly this. The band performed "Stand By Me" during the ceremony, then roamed with guests through Mall Gardens for drinks, walked the short route to the Avon Gorge Hotel, and played another set before the wedding breakfast. Total fee: £1,050 for 2 x 45-minute sets including the walk between venues.

The band's quote to the couple:

"This sounds like so much fun. We would love to be involved and will happily sing you through the streets of Bristol. Bristol is our hometown so it will be even more special!"

The bride's review:

"Best wedding decision I made! A very talented group but they also read the party, moved in between the crowd and really got everyone in the party mood. My favourite memory of our wedding is being walked down the road, singing and dancing, memories both us and our guests will cherish forever."

Few UK cities have this concentration of walkable wedding venues suited to roaming performance.

  • The Square Club, Clifton (4 enquiries) - intimate Clifton venue, suits acoustic roaming
  • Clifton Club (3 enquiries) - start of the Clifton village roaming circuit
  • Armada House (3 enquiries) - city centre venue with space for roaming acts
  • The Radnor Rooms (3 enquiries) - large function venue on St Nicholas Street

Arnos Vale is worth highlighting. A couple recently enquired specifically about a New Orleans-style brass band for their wedding at Arnos Vale. The Ivy League quoted £2,680, Cheeky Brass quoted £2,012 with small PA, and Band Of Brassers quoted £1,500-£2,500. The venue's open-air Victorian garden setting carries acoustic brass sound well and needs no power supply.

Types of Roaming Bands Available in Bristol

Acoustic Roaming Bands

Acoustic roaming bands perform unplugged, without amplification, and move freely among guests. Typical lineup: 1-2 singers, acoustic guitar, cajon or percussion, double bass. Some add saxophone. Repertoire ranges from 60s pop to current hits, often with a folk edge.

In Bristol, The Inlets are the standout acoustic roaming band, Bristol-based with 29 bookings. Acoustic Royale offer acoustic roaming as a duo or trio from their Bristol base with 76 bookings. National options include Wandering Three (225 bookings), The Manhattan Roamers (107 bookings) and Starboard (56 bookings).

Acoustic roaming is ideal for smaller Bristol weddings or venues with strict sound limiters. No PA system, cables or soundcheck needed. Bands arrive about 1 hour before performance and unpack instruments.

Roaming Brass Bands

Roaming brass bands perform New Orleans-style brass music, modernised with pop and soul twists. Instruments: trumpets, trombones, sousaphones. Some include a singer or rapper. Much louder than acoustic roaming bands, making them suited to larger events and outdoor spaces.

Arnos Vale Cemetery and Old Down Estate are Bristol venues where brass roaming works particularly well, with outdoor spaces that carry acoustic brass sound without needing amplification. Brass options that travel to Bristol include The London Brass Roamers (53 bookings), Brass Bonanza (47 bookings) and Cheeky Brass (23 bookings).

Roaming Jazz and Swing Bands

Roaming jazz bands specialise in jazz, swing and Dixieland, typically with clarinet, banjo, trumpet and trombone. Some include a vocalist. Popular at Bristol city weddings for post-ceremony outdoor wandering.

Bristol Jazz Guitar Duo are Bristol-based with 23 bookings and an average price of £677, making them one of the most affordable roaming options in the city. The Zingara Gypsy Jazz Band offer gypsy jazz and swing roaming from their Bristol base. National options include The Dapper Chaps (28 bookings) and The Paperboys (21 bookings).

Amplified and Premium Roaming Bands

Amplified roaming bands use wireless technology: wireless mics, battery-powered amps, wireless electric drumkit. More expensive due to equipment costs but deliver fuller sound with deep bass and crisp highs.

Mashup Kings (Bristol, 202 bookings, £5,000-£10,000) are the premium option for Bristol events, offering roaming acoustic sets alongside their full amplified show. A client review from a wedding at Elmore Court, Gloucester:

"We especially loved the roaming set between mains and desserts! Such a vibe!"

Roaming Beats (£4,000-£6,000) and ROAMEO (553 bookings, £1,500-£5,000) are national premium options that travel to Bristol.

FAQ About Bristol Roaming Bands

How much does a roaming band cost in Bristol?

Based on 90 Bristol enquiries in the last 12 months, typical budgets range from £500 to £6,000, with a median of £2,000. A confirmed roaming band booking in Clifton was £1,050 for 2 x 45-minute sets with Bristol-based The Inlets. New Orleans-style brass bands quote from £1,500 to £2,700 for Bristol weddings. Acoustic roaming starts at around £654 (Fitzgerald & Co) up to £4,000 (Wandering Three). Premium acts like Mashup Kings range from £5,000 to £10,000.

Which Bristol venues work best for roaming bands?

Clifton village venues (Clifton Club, Avon Gorge Hotel, Mall Gardens) are ideal for multi-venue roaming performances, as bands can walk with guests between venues. Arnos Vale Cemetery, Kings Weston House, Old Down Estate and Coombe Lodge all have extensive outdoor spaces suited to unamplified acoustic or brass roaming. The Mount Without and The Square Club are intimate indoor venues where acoustic roaming works well for smaller gatherings.

Can roaming bands perform outdoors in Bristol?

Yes. Outdoor performance is what roaming bands do best. Bristol has many outdoor wedding venues suited to roaming, from Arnos Vale Cemetery to Old Down Estate. Bands may request cover if it rains, as instruments (especially wooden ones) are susceptible to weather damage.

How long do roaming bands perform for?

Typically 2x45 minute sets with a short break. Longer sets are physically demanding for singers without amplification. The confirmed Clifton booking included 2x45 minutes covering the walk between venues. Some bands offer 3x40 minute sets for a higher fee.

Do I need to provide anything for a roaming band?

Acoustic roaming bands need almost nothing: no stage, no PA system, no power supply, no soundcheck. They arrive about 1 hour before performance and unpack instruments. Amplified roaming bands need access to power for charging wireless equipment before the performance. All bands on FixTheMusic hold Public Liability Insurance.

What is a roaming band?

A roaming band performs without cables or wires, moving freely among guests rather than staying static on a stage. Most perform acoustically (unplugged). They interact directly with audience members, take requests, and can walk between venues. They require almost no setup or soundcheck time.

Why people love FixTheMusic

Wow, where do I start? Luna Showband and Night Magic took our breath away...
Wow, where do I start? Luna Showband and Night Magic took our breath away. The most compliments I ever had on the wedding were the band and the singers. People just stared, as they couldn’t believe it. My mother-in-law who is from Canada said, we just don’t get talent like this in Canada! She was so happy. It was just phenomenal. The kids from Arizona who are spoilt and have seen every kind of wedding said it was the best music they have ever seen. It was truly out of this world!! I can’t believe you mastered the bee gees voice and did Night Fever, it was amazing!! When you called us to the stage to stand up there with you, we felt like legends and part of the band!! I will never forget it!! So epic!! Every time I remember those times on the dance floor, we beam with happiness!

Hi Sam and band, The dust has settled a bit and we wanted to reach out again to thank you for playing at our wedding.
