What Is DJ Live?

DJ Live is a new concept on the UK live music scene. It features a group of live musicians (usually singers and solo instrumentalists) performing alongside a DJ. In a nutshell, it's a DJ with live musicians.

What instruments accompany the DJ in DJ Live groups?

The most common instrumentalists to play with the DJ are saxophonists, violinists, percussionists and guitarists, as well as singers – possibly up to three or four, with a mix of male and female singers.

What makes DJ Live acts unique?

DJ Live isn't like a conventional function band. Most bands include more "supporting" instruments, such as bass guitar and keyboard. With DJ Live, however, the only instrumentalists are those who frequently perform solos – sax, electric violin, trumpet, percussion, lead guitar.

With DJ Live, the rest of the sound and harmonies, which would traditionally be provided by the backing band, are provided by the tracks selected by the DJ.

The groups often feature LED or light-up instruments, especially the sax. Another way of describing this musical combination is as "DJ and live music" or "DJ with live instruments" – the perfect accompaniment for a wedding reception in a tipi or marquee, at a corporate event or spectacular product launch.

Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Hiring a Live DJ & Sax Group for Your Wedding or Event...

Where does the DJ & live saxophone trend come from?

Adding a sax player and drums to perform alongside a DJ was first pioneered by UK record label, Hedkandi. They found great success with their residencies in Ibiza fusing a distinctive mix of chill-out and dance tracks over Balearic beats. The sensation quickly spread from Ibiza and the UK, across Europe, the Middle East and South America. It’s now used as inspiration for Ibiza-style parties, weddings and clubs across the world with hosts deciding to hire additional musicians to improvise with their DJ.

What are the most popular options for DJ Sax groups?

The most common line-up is the saxophonist and DJ. Popular additions include percussion (especially bongos, congas and other types of drum), an electric violin and a singer or guitarist. Some musicians use a light-up sax or LED drums and bongos to provide an extra visual impact.

How does the performance work for DJ & Sax groups?

DJs usually provide music for between 4 to 5 hours at an event. During that time, the live musicians will play together in short bursts – usually 15 or 30 minutes per set. The sax is usually amplified using a wireless mic, allowing them to roam amongst guests. This interaction breaks down the usual divide between DJ and audience. The types of music the DJ sax acts play range from 70s and 80s classics, through to house and dance hits, as well as disco, R&B and hip hop tracks.

What sort of events do DJ & Sax groups perform at?

Our DJ, sax and percussionists are frequently booked as an entertainment package for weddings in the UK. Other locations they have travelled to include Ibiza, Mallorca, Tuscany, Prague and the south of France. Cafe del Mar-themed corporate events and festivals are also a common request for a DJ with live musicians.

How much do DJ & Sax bands cost?

Prices usually start at around €1,650/£1,500 and increase depending on how many musicians you choose to add to the group. Factors like travel and the amount of time also impact the cost of hiring the musicians. Some of our most popular groups may charge a bit more to reflect how in-demand they are...these performers will be at the top of their game with several years of experience.

Is the equipment for DJ & Sax groups PAT tested?

Musicians on FixTheMusic have PAT tested equipment, so this includes PA systems, and leads, lighting and the DJ console. Musicians on FixTheMusic also have public liability insurance which means the booker or the venue would not be liable for any losses if equipment is damaged, or the band's equipment causes damage to the venue in any way.

Can DJ & Sax perform a day-time chillout set?

Yes, and most groups will offer this at a reduced rate if you book the evening party set(s). The style for this is usually chillout, lo-fi house, classic and modern pop covers, soul and even some jazz. This style is really appropriate for a laid back pool party, a drinks reception, garden parties, and similar more relaxed events.

Can I choose the covers/songs for the sets of a Sax & DJ duo?

By all means, you should let them know if you have any favourite songs and conversely, and songs that you definitely don't want to hear! However, groups like DJ & Sax are experts in "working" a crowd and pushing the right buttons as and when required, so it's usually best to let them have free rein over most of the music choices. Musicians will also feel more comfortable performing their tried and tested repertoire.

What Kind of Music Does a DJ Live Group Play?

DJ Live groups can usually perform almost any type of music. The most commonly requested styles are 90s, RnB, Motown, house, soul and funk, as well as drum 'n' bass and UK garage.

The trend is moving towards more current dance music, rather than the classic pop and rock tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s that many standard function bands perform.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a DJ Live Group?

The exact cost will depend on the number of live musicians you book to play alongside the DJ. The average cost for a 4-piece DJ Live group is £2,300.

If you wanted to add more musicians and singers then the cost will increase accordingly.

Many of our groups feature all-female line-ups, including female DJ, female sax and electric violinists.

The groups bring the DJ centre-stage (rather than hiding at the back of the stage).

DJ Live groups are also sometimes referred to as a "DJ band hybrid" or "DJ band combo" – as they combine the best of both worlds: live music and instrumentalists with the professional mixing and backing tracks provided by the DJ.

What Kind of Events Is DJ Live Popular At?

DJ Live is becoming increasingly popular as a choice by couples for their evening wedding music.

Couples want the flexibility that comes with hiring a DJ – the ability to choose their own songs that they want them and their guests to dance to at the wedding.

But DJ Live goes one step further and creates much more of a spectacle than a single DJ. Just imagine the sax player roaming amongst your guests while the DJ plays your favourite tunes. It's guaranteed to get the crowd wild!

DJ Live is also frequently booked on FixTheMusic for corporate events and product launches. Brands that want to book something a bit edgier and more dynamic than a usual function band find that DJ Live ticks all the boxes.

DJ Live is a really popular choice with the younger generation of clients and guests, so as a trend it's not going anywhere and we at FixTheMusic predict it will only get more popular over the coming 2-3 years.

Many wedding couples agonise over whether to book a DJ or a function band for their wedding. Both have their pros and cons, and many people (including your wedding guests!) will prefer one or the other. The great thing about DJ Live bands is that they can satisfy everyone's tastes. A professional DJ who can mix tracks and read the crowd, combined with the added spectacle of live musicians with cool and funk instruments (such as light up saxophone, bongos or trumpet) and live singers – it's pretty much the ultimate musical entertainment experience!
