Roaming bands are acoustic groups who perform without cables, allowing them to move among guests and create a lively, interactive atmosphere.
Ideal for drinks receptions and outdoor events, they require little setup, typically play two sets, and pricing varies based on size, travel and performance time.

So how does it work?
Amplified roaming bands
In NOMAD’s case, the lead singer uses a wireless mic of course. Backing vocals are provided by the other band members via headsets. Instruments-wise, guitar and bass are plugged into wireless battery packs and the drums are provided by a very nifty wheeled cajon or wireless electric drumkit.
The quality of amplified sound is impressive with deep bass and crisp highs – make no mistake, this is not sit-down entertainment, they will get you on your feet.
The band call their show a unique form of ‘dining entertainment’ and certainly they interact with the audience in a way that wasn’t technologically possible 10 years ago.
Acoustic roaming and wandering bands
There are also the UK's best acoustic roaming bands or wandering bands featured on FixTheMusic – this option is very popular for smaller weddings or where your wedding venue has a strict sound limiter. A roaming wedding band will often perform a wide mix of pop covers – from the 60s to today's current hits, often with a slightly folk edge to the repertoire.
If you fancy transforming your birthday party, wedding reception or corporate event to a modern mediaeval banquet, then make an enquiry on FixTheMusic where we’ll be promoting a variety of wandering groups over the next few months.
The bands are also known as "wandering bands" – as they tend to wander in between and mingle with guests whilst playing their music and singing. Although almost every wandering band in the UK is based in London, most are happy to travel to other parts of the UK.
Most of the acoustic bands consist of a singer or two (usually male vocals, but often female too), acoustic guitar, cajon or other percussion and double bass. Occasionally the bands might also add a saxophone to the line-up.
Roaming brass bands
Another popular option is to book a roaming brass band – these modern brass groups are inspired by the roving New Orleans-style band but updated with a modern and often unusual twist. The bands usually feature trumpets, trombones and sousaphones, and occasionally a singer or even rapper to perform alongside them. These acoustic brass groups tend to be much louder than the acoustic guitar-based wandering bands, so are perfect for large public events (such as charity parades or marches).
Roaming jazz bands
Another popular type of band in this style is the roaming jazz band. Although similar to the other acoustic roving bands mentioned here, a roaming jazz band specialises in performing jazz and swing music. These groups are perfect for street parties.
They usually feature instruments such as the clarinet, banjo, trumpet, trombone, and may also include a singer or vocalist. The genre of music they play is typically Dixieland jazz (or hot jazz / traditional jazz) that originated in New Orleans.
They are especially popular at city weddings – and often hired to wander outside alongside guests after the wedding ceremony has taken place.
Busking-style bands
Lastly, the bands are often described as a busking-style band. Indeed, part of the tradition of the roaming acoustic band does stem from busking musicians – traditionally, musicians performing live on the street would be acoustic of course as they would have no access to power or amplification.
Every roaming band for hire on FixTheMusic have public liability insurance and PAT tested equipment.
Roaming bands are a brilliant choice, especially for afternoon entertainment at your wedding. They epitomise summer and are perfect for wandering through your guests at drinks receptions.
Below are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about hiring a roaming band, which we hope will act as a definitive guide for booking a wandering band for weddings and events.
“Honestly made our wedding, everyone was up dancing the whole time, all the guys were great. Very kind and just got it! Everyone has told us since the wedding how amazing the band was. For anyone having a wedding soon, know the music is most important to have a great time, and ROAMEO are just great!!! Highly recommend, if anything I’m telling you to have them there!!! Thanks ROAMEO, same time again next week???”
“Book Roaming Beats! They were absolutely amazing at our wedding and were so much fun. Every single song was perfect, they are all so talented and got every single person involved and dancing. I love that the band moves around and so it felt like the whole space was the party and because they didn’t amplify the sound for us, people could also still talk and hear each other. Roaming beats have been talked about non stop by our guests, they made a huge impact on our celebration and brought so much joy. THANK YOU!”
“Absolutely incredible!! This review won’t do them justice, they were so amazing! Every guest from our wedding have said they were their highlight, brought the vibes and energy. The best”
“These guys were fantastic at our wedding. They did a couple of sets, 1 during the reception out in the sun playing some ska and reggae and then another set roaming around the tables. They were so good and really set the mood. Could not recommend highly enough!”
“Thank you for your outstanding performance at The Goring Hotel for the wedding of S & J 2026. As a luxury wedding planner, I have the pleasure of working with some exceptional suppliers, and The Wandering Three are right at the top of that list. On the day, they performed as a five-piece band, and the energy, musicianship and vocals were simply fantastic! Beyond the music, they were impeccably organised, warm, flexible and a genuine pleasure to work with. Their repertoire is incredibly varied, they keep the music flowing seamlessly throughout the day, happily accommodate guest requests wherever possible, and even took care of the announcements for us, which was hugely appreciated. Most importantly, they created an atmosphere that had everyone smiling, dancing and talking about the celebration long after it had finished. A truly first-class team, and one I would recommend without hesitation for any high-end wedding or event.”
“We had the London Roaming Band play at our wedding this past weekend, and they were absolutely fantastic! They created the most incredible atmosphere from start to finish, and the energy they brought was spectacular. The band were so approachable, friendly, and accommodating. They went out of their way to make sure the timing of their performances worked perfectly around our day, which made everything feel seamless. They had everyone on the dance floor for hours, and our guests haven't stopped talking about them. We received so many compliments about how amazing they were, and they truly made our wedding even more memorable. Even the staff said that they were the best band they have ever heard. I wouldn't hesitate to book them again in a heartbeat. They were worth every penny, and I couldn't recommend them highly enough!”
“5 stars are not enough! A very fun band of excellent quality with a brilliant repertoire. But, the most important thing they bring is an intensely personalised attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble in the planning. Every effort was made to understand the event and what was important to us as the clients. There was zero sense of bashing out a standardised set list. In fact, new music was even learned to make this event as special as possible. Timings were immaculate and The Roaming Folks went out of their way to work with the other staff at the event. Not to mention, it was intensely hot and they did not wilt, or even hint at any difficulties. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.”
“What can I say? This is my second time hiring The Ferrymen, this time for a corporate event and they were superb again! The loveliest group, incredibly talented and just the perfect add to any event. Cannot recommend them enough”
“Where to start………!! You guys were amazing, every single one of our guests has said how fantastic you guys were and we can’t thank you enough for making our day just that little bit more special. You have been a dream to work with and brilliant on the day. A roaming band was one of the things from the very start that both Jamie and I really wanted and you 100% delivered. Thank you James and band, you guys rock. Elaine and Jamie x”
“The Ferryman are amazing!! Zack and the rest of the band got the party started at our wedding and kept an amazing positive vibe throughout! On an extremely hot day the band had amazing energy, they were able to play music outside our town hall and then played throughout the journey to the reception on a vintage double decker bus, very impressive! They got such an amazing vibe going and all our guests absolutely loved them. Throughout the day the band were just incredible and Zack was really friendly and responsive when booking the band as well. Could not recommend them higher!!”
“The London Brass Roamers were a joy to work with from beginning to end. During the preparation period they were reassuring, helpful and organised. My daughter was quite particular with her playlist and they never balked at all she wanted. On the day itself they were brilliant. They brought the wedding to life and gave it a huge fresh burst of joyous energy. The music was fab and they looked fab and cool but were warm and generous too. Really can't recommend them more.”
“We hired The Moonwalkers for our wedding, they did 3 x 1 hour sets followed by a DJ set until the end. They’re a lovely bunch of very talented lads, all our guests loved them and they really set the tone and mood for the whole day! I only wished we paid for another set in the evening as our guests we were really loving the vibe towards the end! Would not hesitate to hire them again!! Thank you so much for completing our wedding day.”
